A new view to wear

The effect of a Design

When I went to the art academy in Breda I already finished a design education. There I really learned to design, because I learned to look at things differently. I have learned to look further than the question. Not: design something new, but find a meaningful answer on new questions. What is the effect of your design on people? I started to look at my surroundings in a completely different way. I became conscious of the user. How do people behave? At the kitchen table in our house I noticed with how little attention there was being eaten. This mindlessness swallowing a meal prepared with care is regrettable. Knitted tableware was the solution. Very homely and cosy, but with spilling holes, forcing you to eat with more attention.

Seeing your design

Often it seems like architect don't really see what they design. When my grandfather was in a revalidation centre, I took a look around there with my new view. I noticed how impersonal the rooms and hallways were. Very bare and monotone, all doors uniform. With my old view on design I might have thought it to be functional and tight. But if you are considering whether people feel at home in such a big complex, there is a lot to improve.

Impoverishment is an opportunity

The new seeing also brings up questions about the future. Buildings last for a very long time. But the carpet? After 20 years it loses its look by impoverishment. It's better to extend this lifespan. Impoverishment mainly occurs where people are walking the most. If you don't look at this as a problem, but as opportunity the floor can remain. This is how the carpet for my graduation project came about. It is tufted in a special way making a wear spot give a nice new view. How exactly? That I won't reveal. The 1st design can be seen at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven in the Van Abbemuseum. So come and see! Together with LEOXX we are looking into the possibilities to include the carpet into the collection.

Lysanne Smedts - spacious designer. After getting her MBO diploma project leader interior en exterior, she continued studying at the AKV|Sint Joost in Breda, with a minor in ceramic and in 2015 she graduate on the subject of spacious design. Her projects can be found on www.lyssannesmedts.tumblr.com.
