Acoustics are more than Hertz and decibels

On 18 August 2015

Good acoustics is not about Hertz and decibels. Not only at least. It's about emotion and the wishes of the end users. About how they use the space. Even about the clothes they wear. LEOXX helps with a solid advice and the proper acoustical (floor) solutions.

Are you familiar with the new main office of Deloitte at the Zuidas in Amsterdam? The building is called 'The Edge'. It has a beautiful shape. But something standing out: it is the most sustainable office building in the world. We have provided the hard floors in the building, the Expona. Because we could fulfil two important criteria.

Sustainability and acoustics

First of all there was the criterion of sustainability. The PVC floors from Expona match the BREEAM Excellent quality mark. This is the highest standard in the field of sustainability. The second criterion was acoustics. At Deloitte suits are being worn. This also means the woman will walk a lot on high heels and those produce a lot more impact sound sneakers would. This often leads to distress in the room and the surrounding spaces, the sound spread horizontally and vertically.

You could see how the dressing culture of Deloitte influenced the choice for an Expona floor with acoustical backing. This hard floor has a sound reduction on its own of 2 dB. This is insignificant. The solution is the tool we developed: a layer of pressed rubber underneath the Expona. This gives an additional reduction of 18 dB, giving a total reduction of 20 dB. Providing roughly the same level of sound reduction as soft carpet would.

‘It works!’

I have experienced it myself. Astonishing how big the difference is when you apply Expona with pressed rubber. The team of Fokkema architects we were intensively working with at The Edge, was surprised in a positive way. 'It works!', one of the architects said, with a big smile on her face.

I get this excitement. Acoustics have become an increasingly important topic, partially because of the new way of working. The interior of office has changed, creating noise disturbance. You cannot ignore sustainable floors anymore. Solutions need to be thought about. Sometimes these solution are not found in products, but in logical thinking: don't realise a concentration spot next to a phone booth, don't place sales next to administration. Common sense.

Talking softer thanks to the acoustic floor

I also notice this at our new office in Houten. The acoustics are vastly improved. We have a completely new interior, with a different layout and of course our own products on the floors, acoustical walls and ceilings. But what also has changed, is the speaking level: we talk softer with each other. By giving a good example, the other follows automatically. Sometimes the solution is in your own hands.

And further on it's a matter of feeling. I recently let a client experience the difference between Expona with and without pressed rubber underneath. The client found Expona without the rubber to be the more pleasant sounding option. This is what I want to say: acoustics is not just about numbers, it's also emotion. Everyone can come experience this at our place in Houten.

Feel free to call me and make an appointment. We will figure out together which acoustical (floor) solution suits you best.
