Connection: the magic word for organisations

A good connection is an important factor in a team working together. Unfortunately, we are not used to expressing what really is going on inside us. We judge, interpret and only give each other 'feedback' on what is going well or wrong. This way of communicating does not stimulate connection, it creates distance. That why I, besides working at LEOXX, give trainings in Connecting Communication.

Needs and values are our motivation, the engine making us move. To really make the connection and use differences within organisations to your advantage, it is important to know what your needs are. This asks for deliberately deciding for yourself what you and what the other needs. Connecting Communication supports this process with a 4-plan model:

- Perception: facts without judgement or interpretation.

- Feeling: what you perceive in your body and in interaction with others.

- Need: values of essential importance to all people.

- Request: concrete action asking yourself to fulfil certain needs.

 

Connection start with yourself

For a good collaboration three forms of connection are needed: with yourself, with co-workers and with your organisation. 

I: In connection with yourself you are authentic. You let yourself show as you are, with your beautiful and less beautiful sides. You take responsibility and are outspoken.

- YOU: From the connection with yourself it's easier to connect with co-workers. You approach them in an open and constructive way. You are received as approachable, also for feedback and validation.

- WE: The better you connect to co-workers, the more connection you feel to the bigger whole. You proudly work together towards the same goal. 

Consciousness is crucial for connection

Be aware of your own feelings and values. Next you need the courage and capability to bring this up in conversation. We don't have to act all 'spastic' about this in companies, after all we do this at home as well. It is important for organisations to create an environment where this is possible.
