Dr. Knippenbergcollege
Innovating education, with a lot of space for interaction, meeting and active learning and working methods. That’s where the Dr. Knippenbergcollege in Helmond stands for. The new premise of the high school, located at Sport- en Beleefcampus De Braak, is a future proof and healthy school building which, with its organic and star shaped structure, moves along effortlessly with the changing education.
Exercise as experience
Sport- en Beleefcampus De Braak becomes a park where the buildings are a part of the landscape and where exercise becomes part of the experience. Besides the Dr. Klippenbergcollege, there will also be a spot for the Praktijkschool Helmond, the amateur football club SV De Braak, the Fysioclub JVDI and the sport hall of the Dr. Knippenbergcollege on the campus. With its unique organic star shape the school building fits perfectly with this innovative concept and integrates itself in a natural way to its environment.
OPEN aNd TRANSPAReNT
The open and transparent building of the healthy school is an oasis of light, air and space. Martijn van Leeuwen, project architect at RoosRos Architecten and responsible for the design of the school: “In this design we have given an above-average amount of attention to light and air. Everywhere you experience natural light, glimpses and long sightlines that descend into the outdoor space. This way it’s become an open and very transparent building.” With the spatial layout there hasn’t been chosen for one central auditorium, like is often the case at schools, but for a sequence of spaces which flow into each other beautifully. Martijn: “We haven’t organized the building from a big overwhelming hall, but in smaller concatenated spaces in which you spontaneously go from taking a break through meeting and studying to learning.”
Atmospheric and healthy indoor environment
Besides traditional classrooms there are located in the school amongst others atmospherically designed learning squares, workshops, learning labs, an auditorium and a canteen. With the interior, designed and realized under the guidance of RoosRos, the subject well-being forms an important guiding principle. In this respect a lot of attention has been given to focal points like acoustics and a healthy indoor climate. Because of the use of natural materials, of which the majority consists of the sustainable and partly circular type of wood rubberwood, a warm and intimate interior has been created. The decoration with big wall prints and the unique lighting scheme enhance the open and connective atmosphere. In the meeting and collaboration areas printing carpet with a custom design in the high quality frisé Explain have been applied. The tight play of lines and the geometric shapes in the design are assembled to the structures and shapes found in the building. In addition to this there has been chosen for two wear resistant solution dyed qualities made of sustainable Econyl yarn. The extremely strong and and compact Pep, a mixed carpet with a cut pile, comes out beautifully in a tone which blends perfectly with the warm wood being applied in the spaces. The Sun, a very strong mixed bouclé, fits nicely with its pitch black color with the black base of the custom made printing carpet.
